Muni New Central Subway Project

As prime consultant, in a joint venture, Wong is providing preliminary design services for the $1 billion New Central Subway Project. The 1.7-mile subway begins at Mission Bay connecting to the Muni Metro Third Street surface line and runs north through a tunnel portal on Fourth Street, pasts the Moscone Convention Center, crosses Market Street, and continues north to a terminus near Chinatown. Underground stations will be constructed near Moscone Center, at Union Square the heart of the Downtown shopping district, and on Stockton Street near the center of Chinatown.

The conceptual and preliminary design of the New Central Subway involves evaluation of optimum tunnel construction methodology, underground utilities, design of three underground passenger stations, and tie-in to the surface line at Mission Bay. Systems design includes traction power substations, advanced communications-based train control, and communications systems. Tunnel ventilation and associated power distribution and control systems are an integral part of the Project.
